Mini Rex in Singapore, coat care and climate notes

updated 13 May 2026

Mini Rex are an underrated breed in SG. they don’t get the cover-photo attention of Holland Lop or Lionhead but among long-term owners, they’re often the most quietly recommended breed for first-time HDB owners.

the velvet-pile coat is the distinguishing feature. uniquely short and plush, it lies flat against the body. unlike lionhead mane, it doesn’t mat. unlike standard rabbit fur, it doesn’t shed as visibly. this makes them lower-maintenance to live with than they look.

temperament

Mini Rex tend to be:

  • calm to the point of placid
  • tolerant of handling once trust is built (less skittish than Netherland Dwarf, similar to Holland Lop)
  • friendly toward owners but selective about strangers
  • low-vocal — soft purrs and the occasional honk, less thumping than other breeds
  • adaptable to bonded pair life

individual variation is real. confident lines exist. shy lines exist. but the breed average sits closer to “easy” than most others.

the coat

the Mini Rex coat is unique among common SG breeds:

  • 1.5-2 cm fur length, dense, lies flat
  • velvety to touch
  • minimal shed — fur lifts off cleanly when brushed
  • doesn’t mat

grooming schedule

  • weekly brushing with a soft slicker or grooming glove, 5-10 minutes
  • monthly nail trim
  • inspect ears, eyes, teeth at the same weekly session
  • no shed-season heroics required (unlike longer-haired breeds)

it really is that low-maintenance. owners who have transitioned from a Lionhead to a Mini Rex usually describe it as “I have time for things now.”

the catch: while you don’t see shed fur on the rabbit, the rabbit still sheds at the cellular level. the fur ends up in the litter pan and on the floor. weekly vacuuming is still required.

health watchlist

Mini Rex have moderate health risk overall. main items to watch:

sore hocks (pododermatitis).

short, plush fur on the hocks (rear paw underside) means less natural padding. on wire or hard floors, hocks become inflamed and can ulcerate. prevention is flooring choice — soft surfaces, fleece-over-grid, plenty of carpet during free-roam. annual hock inspection at the vet visit.

dental risk.

similar to other small breeds, moderate. annual back molar check is recommended. the breed’s relatively normal skull conformation means dental issues are less common than in Netherland Dwarf, more common than in larger breeds.

weight management.

Mini Rex are sometimes a bit lazier than other small breeds. they’ll lounge contentedly all day if allowed. this can lead to overweight. tracked weekly with a kitchen scale; healthy adult range is 1.4-2 kg.

GI stasis.

standard rabbit risk. nothing breed-specific. our GI stasis playbook covers signs and emergency response.

climate tolerance

Mini Rex handle SG climate slightly better than long-haired breeds because the short coat allows better heat dissipation. they still need cooling support during the hottest months:

  • ceramic tiles or marble slab in the enclosure
  • AC during midday-afternoon hours when ambient peaks
  • water always available, refilled twice daily
  • weekly weigh-in catches dehydration before it becomes acute

our cooling products guide covers the setup options.

housing for HDB

adult size 1.5-2 kg, similar to Holland Lop. enclosure minimum:

  • 1.4 × 0.6 m base for one rabbit
  • 2 × 0.6 m for a bonded pair
  • soft flooring (fleece over yoga mat works, or tile with rugs over the lounging area)
  • 3-4 hours daily free-roam in a rabbit-proofed room

avoid wire-bottom enclosures completely for this breed — sore hocks risk is real.

diet specifics

Mini Rex tend toward easy weight gain. portion control matters:

  • hay: 80% by weight, unlimited timothy/oaten/meadow mix
  • greens: 1.5-2 cups per day mixed leafy greens
  • pellets: 1-2 tablespoons per day for adults (less if overweight)
  • treats: a thumb-tip portion every 2-3 days, no more

if you notice the rabbit refusing hay and only eating pellets, that’s a sign of either dental issues or treat addiction. our feeding guide covers transition.

bonded pairs

Mini Rex bond well with most other small/medium breeds. our bonding guide covers the process. opposite-sex neutered pairs are usually easiest.

lifespan

healthy SG Mini Rex live 8-12 years. on the upper end of common SG breeds because they have fewer breed-specific health complications than the flat-skull breeds.

what owners often get wrong

  • stroking the wrong direction. Mini Rex coat lies flat. stroking against the lay direction feels uncomfortable to them. always stroke in the direction the fur lies, head toward tail
  • assuming the coat doesn’t shed. it sheds at the same rate as other breeds. the shed fur is just less visible on the rabbit. it’s just as visible on your floor. plan vacuuming accordingly
  • not catching weight gain. because they lounge contentedly, owners sometimes don’t notice gradual weight gain. weekly weigh-in catches it before it becomes an issue
