rabbit cage vs pen vs free-roam in HDB flats

walk into any SG pet shop and the rabbit cages are too small. 60 by 40 cm is common. that’s a prison.
the three real options are cage (only as a base), exercise pen (the SG standard), and free-roam (gold standard but harder). here’s how to choose.
the rabbit space minimum
baseline requirements:
- 4 to 6 sq metres of regular exercise space
- 3 to 4 hours of out-of-enclosure time daily minimum
- room to stand fully upright
- room to take 3-4 hops in any direction
- access to multiple resting spots
a 60x40 cage gives roughly 0.24 sq metres. that’s 4% of the minimum.
option 1: cage (alone, not recommended)
a cage alone:
pros
- contained, easy to clean
- predictable
- compact
cons
- almost always too small
- leads to behavioural problems
- causes physical issues (sore hocks, weakness)
- rabbits in cages alone are objectively unhappy
- shouldn’t be the only enclosure
use case
- emergencies, travel
- temporary illness recovery
- never as the primary housing
option 2: exercise pen (X-pen)
a metal X-pen at about 1.5 to 2 metres diameter:
pros
- adequate space if combined with out-of-pen time
- easy to set up
- containable
- works in HDB
- multiple sizes available
cons
- pen alone still not enough — needs daily out-of-pen time
- rabbits can sometimes hop or climb over (some can)
- floor protection needed
use case
- bedroom or living room corner
- HDB master bedroom
- works for 90% of SG owners
sizing
- 1.5m diameter for small breed
- 2m for medium breed
- 2m+ for large breed
- combined with 3-4 hours out daily
option 3: free-roam
rabbit has run of room or apartment:
pros
- maximum welfare for rabbit
- rabbits show personality more
- bonded pairs thrive
- room becomes “rabbit’s”
cons
- intensive rabbit-proofing required
- chewing damage risk
- harder for renters
- difficult with multiple pets
- training time needed
use case
- one-room free-roam (master bedroom)
- whole-apartment free-roam (committed owners)
- works best with bonded pairs
preparation needed
- cable management (chew-proof covers)
- furniture protection
- litter training (mostly automatic for spayed/neutered)

the SG-specific considerations
three things relevant:
1. HDB space realities
- average HDB is 60-90 sq metres
- bedroom for rabbit (or 1/4 of living room) often works
- balconies need careful safety
- our balcony safety guide
2. flooring matters
- tile slips, hurts joints
- need rugs or mats
- avoid carpets (rabbit will chew or pee)
- mats are removable, cleanable
3. air-con considerations
- enclosure in air-conditioned room ideal
- avoid direct AC blast

the recommendation by setup
studio or 1-room HDB
- X-pen (1.5m) + 3-4 hrs out daily in pen
- or free-roam in entire studio
2-3 room HDB
- X-pen in dedicated room
- free-roam in that room when out
- best: bedroom or living room nook
4-5 room HDB
- X-pen for night/away times
- free-roam in one room or whole flat
- ideal for bonded pairs
condo
- similar to HDB
- often more flexibility
- balcony safety critical
the litter setup
regardless of approach:
- litter box in enclosure or nearby
- hay over litter (rabbits eat while eliminating)

the rabbit-proofing essentials
for any approach beyond pure cage:
- chew-proof cable covers
- block under-furniture access (rabbit getting stuck)
- protect baseboards if rabbit chews
- cover or remove plants (some toxic)
- secure household chemicals
the multi-rabbit consideration
bonded pairs:
- need MORE space, not just double
- X-pen 2m minimum
- free-roam ideal
- avoid combining unbonded rabbits in shared space
the cost reality
setup costs:
- cage alone: SGD 50-150 (don’t do this alone)
- X-pen: SGD 60-150
- free-roam supplies: SGD 100-300 (chew covers, mats, etc)
ongoing similar across approaches (litter, hay, food).
what owners often get wrong
three patterns:
- buying the pet store cage and assuming it’s enough. it’s not
- leaving rabbit in cage 23 hours a day. behavioural problems guaranteed
- assuming free-roam is “too much work.” with rabbit-proofing done, it’s no more work than a pen
