rabbit fly strike prevention in SG humidity

updated 13 May 2026

fly strike is the rabbit emergency that owners least anticipate and most regret. it’s preventable with daily attention. the cost of missing it is severe — within 24 hours of fly eggs hatching, the rabbit can be critically injured or worse.

SG climate is particularly hospitable to the fly species involved. this guide covers what to look for, how to prevent, and what to do if it happens.

what fly strike is

certain fly species (blowflies, bottle flies) lay eggs on damp, soiled rabbit fur. usually around the rear end where urine or droppings have accumulated. the eggs hatch within hours in warm conditions and the larvae (maggots) begin feeding on the rabbit’s skin and underlying tissue.

the rabbit is often unaware or unable to express the issue until significant damage has occurred. the resulting wounds become infected rapidly and can lead to death within 24-48 hours of fly strike onset.

who’s at highest risk

not all rabbits are equally vulnerable. higher risk:

  • elderly rabbits who can’t clean themselves effectively
  • obese rabbits who can’t reach all areas to groom
  • rabbits with mobility issues
  • rabbits with chronic soft droppings or diarrhea
  • rabbits with dental issues that affect grooming
  • rabbits whose enclosure isn’t cleaned daily
  • outdoor or balcony-access rabbits
  • rabbits during heavy moulting

healthy young rabbits with normal mobility and grooming are at lower risk but not zero. SG humidity adds to base risk for every rabbit.

prevention checklist

daily

check the rear end. lift the tail, look at the area around the anus, scent glands, and inner thighs. should be clean and dry. any damp or soiled fur needs cleaning today.

check the litter pan and enclosure floor for flies. even one fly indoors is a concern. address immediately.

ensure the rabbit can move and groom. if the rabbit is hunched, sitting, or otherwise compromised, monitor more frequently.

weekly

weigh the rabbit. weight changes affect grooming ability.

inspect general grooming. is the rabbit fully clean? any matted patches, especially around the rear?

check the litter box system. absorbency, frequency of changing, dryness.

monthly

check for any fly activity in the home. SG homes have flies sometimes. ensure window screens are intact, drains are sealed, no overripe fruit sitting out.

the warning signs

even with daily prevention, fly strike can develop. signs to watch:

stage 1 (early, no maggots yet):

  • fly eggs visible as small white/yellow clusters on the fur, often near the rear or in any moist area
  • often missed unless you’re actively looking

stage 2 (maggots present):

  • visible larvae on the rabbit’s skin, often around the rear
  • the rabbit may be unusually still or reluctant to move
  • skin may be reddened or wet-looking under the maggot area
  • there may be a foul smell

stage 3 (significant infestation):

  • multiple maggots
  • visible skin damage and tissue exposure
  • the rabbit is clearly compromised — lethargic, in pain
  • often very rapid progression

emergency response

if you find fly strike or eggs:

  1. vet immediately. not next morning, immediately. this is one of the few rabbit emergencies where every hour matters
  2. while preparing to transport:
    • examine more carefully but don’t try to remove all maggots yourself
    • wrap the rabbit in a clean towel for transport
    • bring to the nearest exotic clinic (after-hours if needed — our vet directory lists 24-hour options)
  3. at the clinic:
    • vet will clean the area thoroughly under sedation
    • all maggots and eggs removed
    • wounds cleaned and antibiotics prescribed
    • subcutaneous fluids and pain management
    • assessment of the underlying cause (why this happened)

cost: SGD 300-1500 depending on severity. severe cases requiring extensive wound management can run higher.

the cause investigation

after the emergency is resolved, identify why it happened:

  • chronic soft droppings? investigate diet
  • mobility issues? assess flooring and weight
  • enclosure hygiene? change cleaning schedule
  • recently moulting heavily? add daily grooming during moult
  • temperature/humidity factors? address environmental conditions

without addressing the underlying cause, fly strike can recur.

SG climate considerations

SG conditions that increase fly strike risk:

1. humidity.

higher humidity means damp fur stays damp longer. addressing it requires AC, ventilation, and consistent cleaning.

2. high ambient temperature.

fly larvae develop faster in warm conditions. SG year-round is at the optimal fly larvae temperature range.

3. food smells.

ripe fruit, food prep waste, garbage in nearby drains attract flies. ensure garbage disposal is regular and food waste isn’t accessible.

4. open balcony or window access.

even with screens, flies can sometimes enter via window gaps or open balcony doors. inspect screens monthly.

what owners often get wrong

three patterns from SG rescue and owner spaces:

  • assuming fly strike is “more of a UK problem.” SG climate makes us higher risk. multiple cases reported each year locally
  • noticing the symptoms but not acting urgently. the time between visible signs and serious damage can be hours
  • not addressing the underlying cause after one incident. rabbits who’ve had fly strike once need careful surveillance going forward
