rabbit safety during NDP and other SG fireworks

updated 13 May 2026

SG has a relatively orderly fireworks schedule — major events have known dates and locations. owners can plan ahead. for rabbits within audible range of NDP fireworks (the largest), Deepavali (smaller scale), or Chinese New Year (firecracker simulations), preparation reduces stress significantly.

the SG firework schedule

main events:

1. National Day (9 August):

  • main display at Marina Bay, audible across central and east SG
  • generally 8-9pm
  • 30-45 minute display
  • the loudest event of the year

2. NDP rehearsals (July-early August):

  • multiple Saturday rehearsals
  • same location, similar fireworks
  • evening times

3. Deepavali (October-November):

  • smaller community displays
  • mostly Tekka/Little India area
  • generally evening

4. Chinese New Year (January-February):

  • firecracker simulations during lion dance
  • sometimes brief authorised displays
  • generally morning to evening hours

5. New Year’s Eve (31 December):

  • Marina Bay countdown fireworks
  • midnight
  • 5-10 minute display

6. other occasional events:

  • formula 1 races
  • specific concerts or events
  • usually scheduled

preparation

1-2 weeks before known event

  • review your rabbit’s stress threshold from past events
  • ensure you’ll be home during the event if possible
  • assess your home’s audibility (do you usually hear NDP from your flat?)
  • plan accordingly

day of event

  • regular daytime routine maintained
  • evening: ensure all preparations done before fireworks start
  • comfortable temperature, AC running, normal background sound
  • close windows facing the firework direction
  • keep all family members in the home or accounted for

during the event

physical preparation:

  • close all windows in rooms where the rabbit can hear external fireworks more directly
  • background noise: AC, fan, low-volume music (helps mask the fireworks)
  • normal lighting (not bright, not dark, just normal)
  • rabbit’s enclosure accessible and comfortable

behavioural:

  • DO NOT pick up or carry the rabbit
  • DO NOT speak softly close to them (your low voice during their stress is part of the threat profile)
  • carry on with normal household activity
  • let them retreat to their safe zone

watching for:

  • thumping (normal stress response)
  • hiding (normal)
  • refusing food briefly (normal)
  • severe panting or constant rapid breathing (concerning, monitor more closely)
  • lying on side or significant distress (vet contact)

post-event monitoring

morning after:

  • check droppings in the litter box
  • offer favourite greens and observe eating
  • if eating is normal, the rabbit recovered well
  • if eating is reduced or droppings are scarce, the rabbit experienced significant stress

over the next 24-48 hours:

  • continue normal observation
  • if eating doesn’t normalise, consider stasis risk and vet contact
  • our GI stasis guide covers the protocol

the bonded pair consideration

bonded pairs typically handle stress better:

  • mutual comfort during the event
  • shared coping
  • usually less individual stress response

if one of a bonded pair is significantly stressed, the partner often becomes calming influence.

the multi-event considerations

NDP rehearsals (July) plus NDP day plus Deepavali plus CNY plus possible others mean SG rabbits face multiple stress events per year.

planning:

  • track which events your rabbit handles well vs poorly
  • adjust support accordingly
  • consider whether moving the rabbit to a quieter room during particularly bad events is worthwhile

the noise sensitivity individual variation

some rabbits are minimally affected:

  • continue eating during fireworks
  • minimal stress signs
  • recover quickly

others are significantly affected:

  • refuse food
  • significant stress signs
  • recovery takes days

your rabbit’s individual sensitivity determines your level of preparation.

the long-term sensitivity

over years, some rabbits:

  • become less reactive (habituation)
  • become more reactive (cumulative stress)

monitor over multiple years to understand your rabbit’s pattern.

what to do if you can’t be home

if you must be away during a firework event:

  • arrange a trusted person to check on the rabbit
  • ensure adequate water, food, comfortable space
  • close-up monitoring afterwards
  • consider whether your absence amplifies the stress (some rabbits are calmer alone, some more stressed)

the medication option

for rabbits with severe firework anxiety, your vet may consider short-term medication:

  • typically for once-a-year events like NDP
  • discussed with exotic vet
  • not first-line, but available for severe cases

what owners often get wrong

three patterns:

  • picking up the rabbit during fireworks to “comfort them.” being lifted during stress increases stress significantly
  • not preparing in advance. preparation matters as much as response
  • dismissing post-event signs of stress. the rabbit’s eating in the 24-48 hours after matters
