can rabbits drink tap water in Singapore?

the short answer
Singapore tap water (PUB water) is safe for pet rabbits to drink. it meets WHO drinking water standards and is the same water used in household cooking and drinking. you do not need bottled water or special filtration for healthy rabbits.
what about chlorine?
PUB water contains low levels of chlorine for disinfection. these are well below any threshold that affects rabbits. some owners let water sit in an open bowl for 10 to 15 minutes before serving so any residual chlorine dissipates, but this is optional, not required.
should I filter the water?
filtering is a personal choice, not a health requirement. reasons some SG owners filter:
- their household already uses filtered water and they share with the rabbit
- the rabbit has a sensitive GI history and they want to minimise variables
- their tap water has tasted slightly different after pipe work
a Brita-style filter or comparable household filter works fine. avoid mineral-enhanced waters, alkaline waters, or anything with additives.
how much water does a rabbit drink?
a 1.5 kg adult Holland Lop in SG drinks roughly 300 to 400 ml per day in the warm months, sometimes more. that is higher than the same rabbit would drink in a temperate country. for the broader water management picture, see how much water do rabbits need.
bowl vs bottle
both work. rabbits drink more from bowls because the head position is natural, but bowls contaminate faster with hay, fur, and droppings. bottles are cleaner but drip-rate can clog, especially during dusty hay shedding.
many SG owners use both, refill twice daily, and rinse weekly.
what about hot weather?
in monsoon and dry seasons (April to September peak heat), rabbits drink more. check water levels mid-day, not just morning and evening. dehydrated rabbits in SG climate are at higher GI stasis risk.
